Surfing is a recreational surface water sport in which a surfer rides on the face of a moving wave using a surfboard. The waves that facilitate surfing are usually found in the ocean, but can also be found in rivers or lakes in the form of tidal bore or standing wave. However, with the growing popularity of the activity, the surfers often use artificial waves created in artificial wave pools.

There are a variety of boards that are used for surfing. The local people of the Pacific surfed waves on boards such as Alaia and Paipo on their belly and knees. However, with the advancement of the sport, the modern-day surfing refers to a surfer riding a wave by standing on a surfboard. This way of surfing is also popularly known as stand-up surfing. Another popular type of surfing is bodyboarding. This is when the surfer rides a wave on a bodyboard, either lying on their belly, knee or even standing up. Several other forms of surfing include kneeboards surfing, surfing on inflatable mats and body surfing. Body surfing, however, is considered to be the purest form of surfing. Body surfing is when the wave is surfed by the surfer, without a board, using one’s own body to ride on the wave.

There are a lot of surfing destinations around the world that provide excellent surfing experiences. One of the best surfing destinations for 2019 is Portugal. Portugal is the most surfer-friendly countries, and it is the best place to learn to surf. The best surf camps are found around Lisbon, Ericeira and Algarve. Indonesia has thousands of miles of picture-perfect beaches and resorts and is one of the best destinations to surf. Bali, Lombok and Nusa Dua have amazing beginner-friendly surf beaches. Morocco, Costa Rica, Spain and Maldives are some of the best destinations for surfing apart from Portugal and Indonesia.

There are a few things to know that are important before stepping into the water. Firstly, finding a good teacher is of utmost importance. Secondly, surfing in a beginner-friendly beach gives good experience and practice. Moreover, using a soft-top surfboard, in the beginning, helps in the learning process and will be gentle on the feet and posterior. Lastly, it is vital to start slow in the beginning. Tackling small waves before attempting to tackle large waves is essential. And while doing so, wipe-outs are to be expected. In the beginning, surfers can expect a lot of falls and waves knocking them down.
